Bet You Weren't Expecting That

People always talk about how pets take after their owners. Now I'm finding this to be incredibly true. A few months ago my soon-to-be roommate and I were talking about wanting a dog when we finally moved in together. We started doing research on dogs that were available for adoption before we even found a place to live. After a few days (okay maybe weeks) of looking at dogs to adopt I was talking to my mom about our plans. That was when she asked if I had seen the dog that a family friend was fostering.

Needless to say, within 3 days of seeing his picture on Facebook my friend and I decided he had to be ours. Fast forward to now, he is living with my parents until we move into our new dog friendly apartment. Now, you're probably wondering why I'm sitting her rambling about my dog on my medical blog. As you know I have Ulcerative Colitis. My best friend has GI issues as well. Luckily for her, we became friends in time for her to finally start seeing a doctor and getting on medicines. Well, we just found out that our dog has "stress induced Crohn's."

Of course my first reaction to this is "wow my life is a sick joke." I started crunching the numbers about how much money we're going to have to drop on probiotics and special food for him. While I'm still crunching the numbers, it's going to be good to have another person like us in our family. Usually when a dog gets sick the owner feels sooooo bad because they have no idea how they feel or if they’re in pain. My best friend and I are going to know exactly how he feels and how horrible it is. I'm going to understand when he spits out his Flagyl pill because no one ever likes Flagyl. It tastes horrible and kind of makes you want to throw up after finally getting it down.

So maybe it’s nice that our boy is going to take after his owners. Maybe we we're truly supposed to stumble upon our baby boy because we'll be able to get him healthy and love him through all of it. I mean, look at this face and tell me you don't love him already! Everyone, meet Kane.
